Goals for 2017

I don’t have any New Year’s Resolutions this year, mostly because I believe if there’s anything I want to do I shouldn’t wait for an arbitrary date to do it, but in lieu of those, I do have a few goals for the year.

Personal

It wouldn’t be a new year without people clamoring about how they are finally going to get in shape, eat better, lose weight, or whatever. Overall, I’ve had some success in the past with specific diets but not much. And what little I’ve had, it hasn’t made a permanent impact. So this year I’ve taken responsibility to improve my health in several areas and will keep keeping myself accountable with certain measurable, short-term goals.

In my relationships, I hope to be a better husband, parent, son, brother/uncle, and friend this year. As an extreme introvert (most of the time), I’ve realized how hurtful I can be at times without even realizing it. This epiphany didn’t come from any major problem in a relationship, but from introspection after some time thinking about friends I’ve lost touch with over the years. I’d like to focus less on my social media presence and more on intentional, direct contact with people I care about.

I also have several new books to read, and want to continue to make that a priority as part of my ongoing learning. I’m currently reading a book called “Creative Confidence” which I’ll be writing about as well.

Professional

In addition to adding a new member to our family earlier this year, I also changed jobs a few months ago. As well as it’s been going, I want to continue to expand upon my related skills in order to potentially land a job in the web development field in the next several years.

Otherwise, I will continue to work on growing my business in order to work toward self-employment. Since I started in Q2 of 2016, and won’t incur most of the costs I had to start up the company last year, I’m very optimistic about seeing a significant improvement to my bottom line.

Other

Some technical goals I have are to continue learning through various online platforms, which I’ll be sharing more about in the near future. I feel as though I’m already becoming more of a well-rounded developer thanks to some courses that are filling is some of the gaps I’ve had for much too long.

Lastly, as I’ve said I want to take more risks both personally and professionally, fail more, and document my process, I can’t expect to accurately predict where this coming year will take me. But I’m excited for the many possibilities I’ve opened myself up to, and will continue seeking new and challenging experiences.

What are some of your goals (or resolutions) for 2017?
